Change is in the (h)air

Posted on

“Change is good”, said someone, somewhere - and we couldn’t agree more. Changes can represent challenges, closing chapters and new beginnings!

And what better way to mix things up than rocking a new do? We’re big believers that a change to your hair is often the result of a change in your life, and we’re here to help you OWN it.

Whether you’re experiencing a modification for your relationship status, have an eye on the latest celeb hair trends or you just want to mix things up - making life changes can be pretty scary. But you know what’s more scary? Regret.

So whatever your motif behind your new do, consider these tips before nose driving straight into the abyss.

Is this hairstyle/colour right for my shape face and skin tone?

Whether your plan involves chopping off a few inches, lightening your locks or becoming a vivacious shade of blue, it’s important to consider the change in conjunction with your face shape and skin tone. While we salute out-of-the-box hairstyles, don’t let your inner wildling trump the voice of reason.

For example, the platinum fro may have been a semi-plausible hairstyle for Christina Aguilera in the 90’s, but we’re not convinced it worked wonders for the fuzzy platinum fan-base that emerged shortly after its first appearance.

We prefer to save spontaneous activities for outside of the salon, “Avoid making drastic changes in a salon you’ve never been to,” - Neil Cleminson, Creative Genius behind bhave haircare. If you don’t have a regular hairdresser you love and trust, ask your friends and family for their recommendations. Don’t turn up to your consultation empty handed, most hairdressers expect at least one bottle of wine and/or visual representation of what look you hope to achieve, “the more visuals you have to show your hairdresser, the less chance there is for disappointment”.

1. Choose a hairstyle that really works your features – even the greatest of hair cuts won’t do your look any justice if it’s not suited to your face shape. When choosing the right colour for your hair, it’s vital that you consider your skin tone. We suggest washing your face to ensure your there is no makeup changing its natural skin tone before you head over to step 2. Lastly, if your P-O-A involves a colour and a cut, give some thought to ensuring that the new colour will work in conjunction with the new cut. Click here to read our blog on how to decide whether to cut your hair.

2. Leave it to the pros - book in a consultation with your hairdresser as they will be able to determine your face shape and offer professional advice on which styles and cuts would best work for you. If you plan on changing your hair colour, discuss your skin tone and the colours and shades which would best suit you.

3. Google, Google, Google - Once you’ve had a chat with your hairdresser and you feel comfortable about the direction you’re headed in, jump online and start researching similar styles or colours to decipher once and for all what you do and don’t like.

Will your ‘do’ work for you (lifestyle vs. hairstyle)

The modern day gal is all about time management, efficiency and of course, looking (damn) good! Unless you’re Kimmy K with a glam squad on call 24/7, the chances are you want a style that’s going to keep you feeling confident, sexy and ready for the day all in under five minutes. If you suffer from misbhaving strands that have a mind of their own, you could be due for a trip to your nearest bhave salon for a bit of rescue therapy.

1.How much maintenance will your hair require? The gorgeous and sleek lob may look bangin’ on a night out (when you have a few hours to spend blow-drying and straightening your hair) but LOB could quickly turn to LOL to FML on days you have less time up your sleeve.

2. Sweat baby, sweat - will this do work for me? You don’t have to be an A-grade athlete to break into a sweat on a regular basis. Even the school run counts as cardio, right? Whether you’re a gym bunny, a yogi or super-mum, the chances are you don’t appreciate the frizzy look that comes with getting hot. Nor do you have the time, willpower, strength to blow-dry and straightening your hair to the length it requires. If you’ve been longing for an easy to maintain hairstyle then the bhave rescue therapy is the answer to all your hair prayers.

3. If you’re naturally dark and then go platinum blonde or vice-versa, do you have the time or funds to regularly maintain that colour? Such drastic changes can often lead to many in-salon visits and can often leave your hair dry and damages. Reversal of that damage can be achieved with the bhave rescue therapy.

What to do if you’re unhappy with your change…

1.Even the most proactive planners could experience results they didn’t expect. Sleep on it. A new hairstyle can be exhilarating, but it can also take time to adjust to your new reflection. We’re all familiar with the fright you get when you catch a glimpse of yourself in the mirror and think “Who the f*&$ is that!!”, oh wait, that’s me.

2.Re-visit the salon. If you’re still experiencing uncertainty around your new do, we suggest having a chat with your stylist. Together you can work out a remedy for the situation. Colour can be corrected/changed and cuts can be altered. Stay positive, colour is not eternal and hair grows back (click here for how to grow it back in style)

3. OR you could embrace the change and take on the power of a woman with a new hairstyle to conquer the world!

Changing your default is always a risk, but no risk = no gain. It’s not all about the way your new hairstyles looks either, it’s also how it makes you feel. Going from long hair to a pixie cut is not just a change in length, but a change in attitude.

Our suggestion is to approach your new hairstyle with an open and positive mind. Mixing up your look is one of life’s major transitional phases and we’re here for you every step of the way. And as always remember, this is YOUR HAIR, YOUR LIFE, YOUR RULES.
