When all else fades, let your colour remain...

When all else fades, let your colour remain...

Nothing tops that fresh-out-the-salon feeling. Striding out the door, feeling like the number one version of yourself who’s ready to take on anything. Although glorious, visits to the hair pros can be an investment and we often find ourselves wondering what it is we can do to keep our colour flickering from shade to shade in between visits. Whether you’re covering up dark roots and greys, or you’re mixing up your look with a vibrant array of colour, we all want our new colour to last.

There are a few elements that trigger the dreaded fade, some obvious and others less so. Let’s talk about how you can keep your colour where it belongs…

AVOID STRIPPING

Stripping hair is something we prefer to steer clear from in hair care (unless of course required). Harsh products could be stripping your hair of all those gorgeous hues. Pay attention to the ingredients lists of your products and opt for shampoos and conditioners that are gentle and sulphate free as harsh detergents and chemicals will strip away that colour you’ve worked so hard to achieve. Shampoo and conditioners that are also pH-balanced will prove to enhance and extend the life of your hair colour.

Another significant colour-stealing culprit is plain old H2O. That’s right, you could literally be washing your colour down the drain. It’s good practice to skip washing your hair whenever you can in order to improve the longevity of your spunky strands. Choose your washes wisely and use bhave gunpowder dust to soak up those oily roots in between washes. PUT YOUR COLOUR WHERE THE SUN DON’T SHINE

Whatever the season, sun rays can speed up your colour fading process. Fast. The sun’s harmful UV rays have many drawbacks, but messing with our carefully assembled tresses is where we draw the line. Protect your hair by applying sunscreen as you would to your skin, and cover it with a hat. Our in-house hair care #BossMan Neil Cleminson, recommends using the bhave leave-in crème to help further protect your hair from UV rays.

With warmer weather often comes the temptation to plunge into a pool (or a large body of hair-damaging chemicals, depending on how you look at it). Try to avoid cooling-off in chlorine without a swimming cap, this will protect your hair from the colour-stripping chemicals that lie beneath.

Our tip: Deep conditioning treatments will help restore shine and seal the cuticle which will help lock in your colour for longer. In an ideal world, we suggest treating yourself to a once-a-month pamper sesh. Wash your hair twice with your fave shampoo before evenly applying the deep conditioning masque, run a bath, add the bubbles, light your candles and allow the masque to perform its magic for 30 minutes. Rinse, and apply your favourite conditioner (to seal your cuticle) rinse out conditioner and voila!

DAMAGED GOODS

Problem:

Just like a bad horror movie, we’ve saved the most disturbing truth until last. Did you know that colour itself could also be at the root of your discolouration? Highlighting the hair too often, or applying a “box colour” could be damaging your hair, and when hair is damaged the cuticle opens and the colour escapes. The excessive use of heating tools such as straighteners, hairdryers and curling tongs can impede the lifetime of your colour. Make sure you protect your tresses, learn why you need to protect your hair from the heat.
